Introduction to the Prisoners versus Guards Game

چکیده
Suppose that you are competing in a two-player game in which you and your opponent attempt to pack as many “prisoners” as possible on the squares of an n×n checkerboard; each prisoner has to be “protected” by an appropriate number of guards. Initially, the board is covered entirely with guards. The players – designated as “red” and “blue” – take turns adjusting the board configuration using one of the following rules in each turn:

Introduction to the “Prisoners and Guards” Game
We study the half-dependent problem for the king graph Kn. We give proofs to establish the values h(Kn) for n ∈ {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and an upper bound for h(Kn) in general. These proofs are independent of computer assisted results. Also, we introduce a two-player game whose winning strategy is tightly related with the values h(Kn). This strategy is analyzed here for n = 3 and some facts are give...
متن کاملInvestigating the role of pathological personality traits based on DSM-5 (PID-5) in moral disengagement
Background: Ethical issues and problems related to the behavior of individuals, in particular prisoners, including disobedient and rude towards the guards, curators and other prisoners, common immorality in friendly relationships and in-prison violence are new problems that it requires resorting to new ideas in the realm of ethics to find solutions for them. This study aimed to investigate the ...
متن کاملRethinking the psychology of tyranny: the BBC prison study.
This paper presents findings from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) prison study - an experimental case study that examined the consequences of randomly dividing men into groups of prisoners and guards within a specially constructed institution over a period of 8 days. Unlike the prisoners, the guards failed to identify with their role. This made the guards reluctant to impose their au...
متن کاملStressing the group: social identity and the unfolding dynamics of responses to stress.
Participants in the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) prison study were randomly assigned to high-status (guard) and low-status (prisoner) groups. Structural interventions increased the prisoners' sense of shared group identity and their willingness to challenge the power of the guards. Psychometric, physiological, behavioral, and observational data support the hypothesis that identity-bas...
متن کاملVoluntary Cooperation Based on Equilibrium Retribution – An Experiment Testing Finite-Horizon Folk Theorems
Unlike previous attempts to implement cooperation in a prisoners’ dilemma game with an infinite horizon in the laboratory, we focus on extended prisoners’ dilemma games in which a second (pure strategy) equilibrium allows for voluntary cooperation in all but the last round. Our four main experimental treatments distinguish long versus short horizon and strict versus non-strict additional equili...
